Port Descriptions

Rome, Italy The eternal city, constructed of ruins, opens for the visitor as a living museum. The centuries peel back with each new vista. For a taste of the Baroque, visitors need only climb the Spanish Steps, walk through the Piazza Navona or visit the beautiful Trevi Fountain. Renaissance splendor is best revealed in the Pope’s residence, the Vatican Palace, or on the roof of the Sistine Chapel. From early Christian Basilicas to the Roman Forum, the Coliseum and the Pantheon, the sequence of history trails back to the height of the Roman Empire. It may sound like a city of contrasts, but Rome’s timeless magic lies in its ability to blend the old with the new. Empires have risen and fallen, old gods have been replaced with new ones, but Rome remains.

Sorrento, Italy is a pretty  town, with breathtaking views from the cliff tops over the Bay of Naples. The rugged coastline does not offer beaches but Sorrento is perfectly placed for visiting including Pompeii, the summit of Mount Vesuvius, the picturesque towns of the Amalfi Drive, and the delightful Isle of Capri with its blue grotto, just a few miles offshore.

Trapani, Sicily, Italy Trapani was founded by the Elymians to serve as the port of the nearby city of Erice (ancient Eryx), which overlooks it from Monte San Giuliano. The city sits on a low-lying promontory jutting out into the Mediterranean Sea. Trapani is a popular starting point for  Erice, Segesta and the Egadi Islands.

Valletta, Malta a UNESCO World Heritage site, is nothing short of an open-air museum. It is a living experience of Baroque architecture, a monument donated by the Knights of St John nearly five centuries ago. Throughout the years, Valletta has welcomed emperors, heads of state, artists and poets and is the permanent seat of the Maltese government.

Corfu, Greece is the greenest and, quite possibly, the prettiest of all Greek islands—emerald mountains, ocher and pink buildings, shimmering silver olive leaves. The turquoise waters lap rocky coves and bougainvillea, scarlet roses, and wisteria spread over cottages. This northernmost of the major Ionian islands has, through the centuries, inspired artists, conquerors, royalty, and, of course, tourists.

Hvar, Croatia is the queen of the Croatian Dalmatian islands. Separation from the mainland  provides  protection from the factory chimneys and other aspects of  development. Instead, there are vast fields of lavender, ancient olive trees and vineyards, in immaculate harmony between man and nature. Through the centuries, an oasis of culture has remained here, a testimony to the identity.

Koper, Slovenia Koper’s main sight of interest is its Venetian-era old city, aptly named Old Town. Its main street, Cevljarska is no more than two or three meters wide in some places and is packed from dawn to dusk. Cevljarska will lead you towards the town’s main square, Titov Trg (Tito Square), which is dominated by the bell tower of the St. Mary’s of the Assumption Cathedral. Perhaps the most astonishing building on the square is the hacienda-like Praetorian Palace, the seat of the city’s governor during the Venetian Republic.

Venice, Italy
It’s called La Serenissima, “the most serene,” a reference to the majesty, wisdom, and monstrous power of this city that was for centuries the unrivaled mistress of trade between Europe and the Orient and the bulwark of Christendom against the tides of Ottoman expansion. Built entirely on water by men who defied the sea, Venice is unlike any other place. No matter how many times you’ve seen it in movies or on television, the real thing is more dreamlike than you could ever imagine. Its landmarks, the Basilica di San Marco and the Palazzo Ducale, are exotic mixes of Byzantine, Gothic, and Renaissance styles. Shimmering sunlight and silvery mist soften every perspective here, and you understand how the city became renowned in the Renaissance for its artists’ rendering of color. It’s full of secrets and inexpressibly romantic.
